Bulk Barn Foods Limited is considered Canada's largest bulk foods retailer with stores located in every province. The company was founded in 1982 and they currently operate over 260 retail locations.

Bulk Barn carries more than 4,000 products - including soup and nuts, baking and candy-making ingredients and supplies, candy, snacks, cereals, grains, spices, dried fruits, vitamins and supplements, health and natural food products and pet food. Their marketing campaigns are based around their motto of "Pinch to a Pound", which indicates to customers that they can buy as much or as little as they need.

In 2017, Bulk Barn partnered with zero waste enthusiast, Béa Johnson, and launched a Reusable Container Program that allows customers to shop waste free should they choose.

Products

Bulk Barn carries products in categories including:

  • Candy and chocolate: 200 + types of assorted candies, gummies, sugarless sweets and chocolates, candy making supplies and ingredients.
  • Baking ingredients: regular and specialty flours, baking mixes, sugars, baking nuts, chocolates and dried fruits.
  • Party supplies: 50 + character cake pans with decorating instructions (available for sale or rent), piñatas, 50 + types of nuts, fruit & nut mixes and trail mixes, pretzels, corn snacks, Bits & Bites, Ritz Bitz Sandwiches, cheese snacks and party mixes, as well as coffee and tea.
  • Pasta, rice, beans & spices: different pasta shapes and varieties, regular and specialty soup bases, beans and cereals, rice, 100 + spices.
  • Health foods: vitamins, minerals, herbal and specialty supplements, protein powders and packaged health foods & beverages.
  • Gluten-free: flour mixes and alternative mixes, various packaged products such as cereals, crackers and snacks, bulk gluten-free products have labels as well as tagged scoops for clearity.
  • Pet food: bulk and packaged products for various pets and animals.

Locations

Bulk Barn Foods Limited operates corporate locations in every province in Canada, more than half of them are operated by franchisees. The average size of a Bulk Barn store is approximately 5,000 square feet.The first Bulk Barn stores were located in large shopping malls; however, as the brand has grown locations are now primarily located in large suburban developments, as well as outdoor strip malls and stand-alone locations.

Reusable Container Program

The Reusable Container Program is a pilot project partnered with Zero Waste Home. The Reusable Container Program allows customers to bring in their own reusable container or bag to purchase goods in. Containers or bags must be reusable and inspected by an employee for health and safety reasons before shopping for products. Containers and bags must follow Bulk Barn standards for use including:

  • free of chips, cracks, stains, debris, dirt, rust, and residual food
  • designed for food
  • with a lid, drawstring, or clip-closure

Paper and plastic bags cannot be reused. Containers will be weighed before being filled so that customers are not being charged for the weight of their container.Products scooped into a reusable container is marked as final sale and cannot be placed back into Bulk Barn barrels or tubs.
